Breaking Down the Blooms: Why are Wedding Flowers so Expensive?
Why are Wedding Flowers so Expensive?
Wedding flowers are a beautiful and integral part of any wedding decor but they can also be a significant expense. Many of the couples I speak to are often surprised at the cost. And, they ask me why wedding flowers cost so much. Therefore, I’ve written this post to share some of the reasons wedding flowers can be pricey:
Seasonal Availability
Flowers are seasonal. Consequently, their availability and prices vary greatly throughout the year. Certain flowers are only available during specific seasons. Sometimes, flowers may need to be imported from other countries, which can increase their cost.
I am regularly asked by brides to include peonies in their floral arrangements. It’s a beautiful flower and one of my favourites. However, peonies only bloom for a short time. With such a short seasonal window, the price is always higher for this flower type.
Top Tip – always ask your florist for recommendations on seasonal flowers. Also, ask your florist how they can incorporate your flower preferences within the budget you have available.
Expertise and Service
Creating beautiful floral arrangements takes a lot of skill and expertise. In addition, wedding florists spend many hours designing, preparing, and arranging the flowers for your special day. At Red Pearl Creations we also want to source the best quality flowers for our brides. We prepare the flowers for arrangements, and I am also on hand to set up the displays at your chosen wedding venue. All of this requires a significant amount of time and expertise, which contributes to the overall cost.
Top Tip – Since it’s a craft, don’t ask us to simply discount the price. Ask us, what changes can be made to accommodate your budget. There are always ways to dial it up or down based on your budget.
Customisation
Every wedding is unique, and each couple has their own vision for their special day. We work closely with couples to create customised floral arrangements that match the bride and groom’s wedding style. The type of flowers, colour scheme and arrangement style are integral parts of the designs we create and this level of customisation requires additional time and effort, resulting in an implication on price. However, you will be pleased with the designs as they custom-designed and made with care.
Top Tip – As above, ask how much more the customisation is adding to time and budget. How can we scale up or down to meet our budget needs?
Transportation and Set-Up
Flowers are arranged on our site with our expert florists, and are transported to the wedding venue to be set up along the aisle, mandap and around the wedding as agreed with the bride and groom. This requires careful handling and transportation to ensure that the flowers arrive in perfect condition. We carefully package all the flowers, load them up, and transport them to your venue which is often more than an hour away. The set-up process is lengthy but important to ensure every arrangement is perfectly placed.
Top Tip – think about reusing some of your florals to make savings in transportation and set-up. The less we transport and the more we use, the more you can benefit from cost savings. Read our blog Sustainable Style: How to Design an Eco-Friendly Wedding Mandap to learn about how to create sustainable style.
At Red Pearl Creations we know that wedding flowers are expensive and that’s why we ask our couples to speak to us about your budget and the overall look you want to achieve. While flowers can be expensive, a professional florist can guide you on how to achieve a particular look, or a similar look, with your available budget. Or, even guide you to suitable alternatives if required.
Yes, we can deliver fresh florals for your event but also manage silk florals. Have a chat with us about your preferences and why and we can make the appropriate recommendations. Silk florals come with their own challenges and are not always “cheap”.
Happy wedding shopping – as always, feel free to get in touch if you need any advice or to discuss the best florals for your wedding mandap and ceremony.
All the best,
