Sustainable Style: How to Design an Eco-Friendly Wedding Mandap

Weddings are a joyous occasion, but they can also be an environmental burden

The average wedding produces a significant amount of waste and carbon emissions, from transportation to food to decor. As venue stylists, we have the power to reduce the environmental impact of decor through thoughtful and intentional design choices. One area where we can make a big impact is in the design of the wedding mandap.

Here are our top 3 tips for eco-friendly wedding mandap design:

1. Use locally-sourced and sustainable materials

When designing a wedding mandap, consider using sustainable materials. By choosing locally-sourced materials, you reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation, and by selecting sustainable options, you reduce the impact on natural resources. You can also work with local vendors and artisans to support the local economy and reduce transportation emissions.

We often use natural woods where we can. Select locally grown foliage if possible and purchase items from local suppliers.

2. Reuse and repurpose materials for decor.

Another way to make your wedding mandap eco-friendly is to reuse and repurpose. Incorporate items in your decor that can be reused after the wedding, such as potted plants, succulents, or other eco-friendly decor.

We often add potted plants as part of our aisle way decor that couples can keep or give to their guests. If not re-used by the couple, we try to find ways to have them replanted or donated. This option reduces waste and ensures that the materials you use have a longer lifespan.

Another idea is to reuse decor across events. When working with our couples we recommend reusing floral displays from the mandap as centrepieces for the reception. Read about how one of our RPC Brides did that by clicking here.

3. Choose energy-efficient lighting and decor options.

Lighting and decor can also have a big impact on the environmental footprint of a wedding mandap. To reduce energy consumption, choose energy-efficient options, and consider using candles or other natural lighting sources when possible. Many of the venues we work in have beautiful sky lights or floor to ceiling windows letting in a lot of natural light for the daytime ceremony. You can also use solar-powered or battery-powered decor options to reduce the use of electricity. By making thoughtful choices about lighting and decor, you can create a beautiful and eco-friendly mandap that is gentle on the environment.

In conclusion, designing an eco-friendly wedding mandap requires intentional choices and thoughtful planning. We have the power to make a difference in the environmental impact of weddings, and designing eco-friendly mandaps is one way we can contribute to a more sustainable future.
